10 Top tips for acute back pain

When your back “goes” it can be a very scary experience, especially if it’s your first time. Here are some practical tips to help you manage the acute back pain:

1. Don’t panic
The severity of your pain is not usually an indication of how serious the problem is.

2. Use ice
Most people reach for the hot water bottle – BIG MISTAKE! Use an ice pack for 15 minutes at a time, 3 times a day.

3. Keep mobile
Gently move at regular intervals.

4. Listen
If what you’re doing is painful, STOP! The pain is a warning sign.

5. Get some rest
Sleep in whichever position is most comfortable to you at the time, generally on your back with knees bent and a pillow underneath them.

6. Don’t lie flat on the floor
Lying with your legs straight on a hard surface increases the load on the bottom of your back.

7. Don’t get in a hot bath
The heat will aggravate the inflammation and the position can make you seize up.

8. Beware of medication
Take whatever medication is necessary to give you some relief but remember it is only masking the pain and you should still be very careful.

9. Don’t be proud
Don’t feel like you’re being a burden. Your friends and family are there to help!

10. See you Chiropractor
If your pain is not getting better after 48 hours or is getting worse, you should seek help. The sooner you start treatment, the sooner you will start to feel better.
